Product Description
Titanium Dioxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula TiO2. It is a white, solid, or powdery amphoteric oxide with a molecular weight of 79.866. It is non-toxic, offers excellent opacity, whiteness, and brightness, and is considered one of the best white pigments available. Titanium White has strong adhesion, resists chemical changes, and remains permanently white. It is widely used in coatings, plastics, paper, printing inks, synthetic fibers, rubber, and cosmetics. It has a high melting point and is also used to produce refractory glass, glazes, enamels, porcelain, and high-temperature labware. Titanium Dioxide can be extracted from rutile using acid or from titanium tetrachloride. In nature, it exists in three polymorphs: rutile, anatase, and brookite, with several synthetic crystal forms also available.
As of October 27, 2017, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified titanium dioxide as a Group 2B carcinogen.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration permits titanium dioxide as a color additive in all foods, with a maximum usage level of 1g/kg. It can be safely used in general coloring foods, including dried fruits, jelly, fried foods, cocoa products, chocolate, chocolate products, hard candies, coated candies, gum-based candies, puffed foods, candy coatings, mayonnaise, salad dressing, jam, powdered beverages, konjac gel foods, and more.
Production Process
Two industrial methods for producing titanium dioxide are the sulfate process and the chloride process:
- Sulfate Process:Sulfuric acid is used to digest titanium-containing minerals, resulting in a titanium sulfate solution. This is purified and hydrolyzed to yield a titanium dioxide precipitate, which is then calcined to produce titanium dioxide pigment. This process is complex, non-continuous, involves around 20 steps, and generates substantial waste. The process requires high energy due to multiple operational steps for crystal form transformation.
- Chloride Process:Titanium ore, high-titanium slag, synthetic rutile, or natural rutile reacts with chlorine to produce titanium tetrachloride, which is then purified by distillation and subjected to gas-phase oxidation. After rapid cooling and gas-solid separation, titanium dioxide is obtained. This method saves significant energy compared to the sulfate process as it does not involve calcination, and the primary particles of titanium dioxide are easier to deagglomerate.
